Falling for Japan: Experiencing Autumn in Shizuoka

The long summer heat is finally gone, and autumn is here in Shizuoka! The air feels cool and fresh in the mornings and evenings. All around the city, the trees are starting to change color. On my walk through Sumpu Castle Park every day, I love watching the leaves slowly turn color, then gently fall to the ground. This seasonal change is so beautiful and peaceful—it's a very special time of year.

The Tradition of "Momiji-Gari"

In Japan, we have a great cultural tradition called "Momiji-Gari" (紅葉狩り). This literally means “maple leaf hunting." Don't worry, we don't actually hunt the leaves! It just means we go out to enjoy the beautiful autumn nature and its colors. Other countries, like those in Europe and North America, also have nice autumn leaves. But here, the deep red of our Japanese maple (Momiji) and the bright gold of the ginkgo (Ichō) trees are truly amazing!

Where the Colors Shine Brightest

The leaves on the city streets are lovely, but the best Japanese autumn views happen when you see the colors together with our traditional places—the mountains, temples, and shrines. The natural autumn beauty found in the Japanese countryside is breathtaking, and the meticulously planned foliage in a traditional garden is an equally magnificent sight. Imagine the strong red and gold leaves next to a calm Shinto shrine or a historic temple. It’s an unforgettable sight!

Latest Update! The Best Viewing Season for Autumn Colors

According to the "2025 Autumn Foliage Forecast (2nd forecast)" released by the Japan Meteorological Corporation (JMC) on October 2, 2025, the peak viewing period for both red leaves (Momiji) and yellow leaves (Ichō) in the plains areas of Eastern and Western Japan is generally expected to be average or later than average.

Specifically, in the plains of Shizuoka, the peak viewing season is likely to be:

  • Ginkgo (Yellow Leaves): Early December
  • Maple (Red Leaves): Late November

Please note that if high temperatures continue, the coloring process may be delayed. We recommend checking the latest forecasts and heading out to your favorite spots!
