Through two tea harvest experiences, I learned more about the people behind the tea and the role it continues to play in Shizuoka's identity. Falling for Japan: Experiencing Autumn in Shizuoka
Seasons & Events · 21. October 2025
The long summer heat is finally gone, and autumn is here in Shizuoka! The air feels cool and fresh in the mornings and evenings. All around the city, the trees are starting to change color. On my walk through Sumpu Castle Park every day, I love watching the leaves slowly turn color, then gently fall to the ground. This seasonal change is so beautiful and peaceful—it's a very special time of year.

My tour with Akane in and around Shizuoka was a great experience. She perfectly fulfilled my wish to take a tour off the beaten track. The visit to a tea and wasabi farm deep inland was a dream come true for me. The way back to Shizuoka was also something special. At my request, Akane took me to places that are unusual for tourists. Akane's enthusiasm for her hometown was palpable at every moment. I am very grateful that she made this wonderful day possible for me.

Shincha, which means "new tea" (Shin = new, Cha = tea in Japanese), marks the start of one of Japan’s most exciting tea seasons.

We had a wonderful tour with Akane during the Shimizu/Shizuoka port stop of our Holland America cruise. Akane tailored the pace, locations visited, meeting time, and descriptive narrative to our specific group's interest. Our group included 3 seniors (including two over 80), and one special needs adult. She was knowledgeable, congenial, patient and kind. As a Shizuoka/Shimizu local she shared both the history and her love of her home town all in excellent English. We visited both the Sumpu...

There's a Japanese expression that goes, 'Three Cold Days, and Four Warm Days.' This is how spring arrives each year. There were some very cold days last week, but it's been quite warm the past few days. I pass by Sumpu Castle park almost every day and have been longing for the time when the cherry blossoms start blooming. And then, FINALLY, the cherry blossoms have started to bloom! The weather forecast reports that they will be in full bloom on April 4th-5th, around the time of Shizuoka...
